Core Concepts: Triggers, Nodes, and Lanes

Last updated: April 30, 2026

Understanding these core components will help you build and manage workflows effectively.

Triggers

Triggers are events that initiate a workflow.

Common triggers include:

  • Shipment State Change
Triggered when a shipment reaches a specific state (e.g., Delivered, At Destination)

  • Light Sensor
Triggered when light is detected, indicating the package may have been opened

Nodes

Nodes define what happens within a workflow.

Types of nodes:

  • Trigger Nodes
Detect when a workflow should start

  • Action Nodes
Perform an action (e.g., mark shipment as complete)

  • Delay Nodes
Pause the workflow for a defined period (e.g., wait 24 hours)

Lanes

Lanes group shipments that follow the same rules.

  • Workflows are configured per lane

  • Each lane can have its own completion criteria

  • Examples:

    • Domestic Ground

    • International Air

    • Cold Chain

Why This Matters

By combining triggers, nodes, and lanes, you can create flexible workflows that match your operational needs.
