Archive or Delete a Tag

Last updated: June 9, 2026

Tags help organize and categorize information across CONTXT. If a tag is no longer needed, you can either archive it for future use or permanently delete it once it is no longer associated with any entities.

Understanding the Difference

Archive a Tag

Archiving removes a tag from active use while preserving it for future reference.

Archived tags:

  • Are moved to the Archived tab

  • Can be restored at any time

  • Retain their existing associations and history

  • Are no longer available for new assignments while archived

Archiving is recommended when you may need the tag again in the future.

Delete a Tag

Deleting permanently removes a tag from CONTXT.

To protect data integrity, a tag can only be permanently deleted if it is no longer associated with any entities.

Before deletion, CONTXT checks whether the tag is currently used by:

  • Shipments

  • User Access Groups

  • Lane Profiles

  • Product Profiles

If the tag is still in use, CONTXT will identify the associated entities so they can be updated before deletion.

How to Archive a Tag

  1. Navigate to Configuration → Tags

  2. Locate the tag you want to retire

  3. Select Archive

  4. The tag will move to the Archived tab

The tag is now removed from active use but can be restored later if needed.

How to Restore an Archived Tag

  1. Navigate to Configuration → Tags

  2. Open the Archived tab

  3. Locate the archived tag

  4. Select Unarchive

The tag will immediately return to the active tag list.

How to Permanently Delete a Tag

  1. Navigate to Configuration → Tags

  2. Open the Archived tab

  3. Locate the tag you want to remove permanently

  4. Select Delete

If the tag is still associated with any shipments, user access groups, lane profiles, or product profiles, CONTXT will prevent deletion and identify where the tag is being used.

Once all associations have been removed, the tag can be permanently deleted.

Best Practices

  • Archive tags before deleting them whenever possible.

  • Review impacted entities before removing a tag permanently.

  • Use archiving for seasonal, temporary, or inactive tags that may be needed again later.

  • Permanently delete tags only when they are no longer needed and have no remaining associations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I delete a tag?

A tag can only be deleted when it has no remaining associations. If the tag is still assigned to shipments, user access groups, lane profiles, or product profiles, CONTXT will block deletion and show where the tag is being used.

Does archiving remove the tag's history?

No. Archiving preserves the tag and its existing relationships so it can be restored later.

Can I restore an archived tag?

Yes. Archived tags can be restored at any time from the Archived tab by selecting Unarchive.
